O primeiro tema do ano e fazer algo usando papel. Eu optei por um projecto em origami e fiz um casal Japones. Usei as instrucoes e papel deste kit e uma moldura simples em preto.

The first challenge of the year is to make something using paper. I chose an origami project and made a Japanese couple. I used the instructions and paper from this kit and a simple black frame.

Os meus gaiatos tambem decidiram participar. :)

Com este tema encerra-se um ano muito criativo. O tema final e fazer algo brilhante. Como passei a semana bastante constipada decidi fazer algo simples. Usando papel, tesoura, cola e brilhantina, fiz flocos de neve decorativos. A ideia veio do facto de nao termos tido um Natal com neve, so nevou ontem.

With this challenge we come to the end of a very creative year. For this final challenge we had to make something with sparkle. I spent the week with a bad sinus cold so I went with something simple. Using paper, scissors, glue and glitter I made decorative snowflakes. The idea came from not having a white Christmas, it only snowed yesterday.

Esta semana o tema foram os temas anteriores. Fazer algo a nossa escolha. Eu voltei ao desafio #33 - UFO, quando o tema foi acabar projectos pendentes. O meu filhote mais novo precisava de uma vestimenta em estilo Africano para a escola. Nas aulas de musica praticaram cancoes das Festas de todo o mundo, e ontem cantaram no ginasio. Ja tinha comecado ha tempo e acabei ontem de manha. Foi um projecto improvisado em que usei tecido, maquina de costura e cola para tecido.

This week's theme were all the previous challenges, our choice. I went back to challenge #33 - UFO and finished my youngest's African costume for the schools Holiday Sing. They sang songs from around the world and wore all kinds of ethnic costumes. I had started a while back and finished most of it yesterday. It was an improvised project using fabric, sewing machine and fabric glue.

This week we made something for the kids. A while back I found a kit on clearance to make two felt characters from "Spongebob Squarepants". Since my kiddos are fans this was the perfect opportunity to make them.

Muito simples e rapidos de fazer. Acho que ficaram muito engracados: Spongebob e o seu caracol do mar/gato Gary.

Esta semana o tema sao coroas decorativas. A minha foi inspirada pela neve. Usei uma base de espuma, fita branca e azul, fio durado, guizos, lantejoulas prateadas em forma de floco de neve, cola e alfinetes. Atei varios guizos com o fio dourado, cobri a base enrolando-a com as fitas branca e azul usando-as tambem para prender o fio dourado. Usei a cola para ajudar a manter as pontas da fita no sitio, e apliquei os flocos com alfinetes. Por fim usei fita azul para fazer um no para pendurar.

This week's theme are wreaths. Mine was inspired by snow. I used a styrofoam base, white and turquoise ribbons, golden thread, jingle bells, snowflake shaped silver sequins, glue and pins. I tied a few bells with the golden thread, covered the base wrapping it with the ribbons and also using the ribbon to attach the golden thread. I used glue to keep the ribbon tips in place and I applied the snowflakes with pins. To finish I used ribbon to make a loop for hanging.

This was last week's theme that I couldn't finish on time because one of my kiddos was sick. Something for the table, useful or decorative. I made a rope trivet. I used only rope, pins to keep everything in place, needle and thread.

I chose Team UU centered on Terry Pratchett's books and made a dragon that is part of his "Discworld". A round and flat world supported by four elephants on the back of a large turtle. The pattern "Flynn The Swamp Dragon" is by Steph Conley. I used Lion Brand Vanna's Choice and Pattons Classic Wool yarns in shades of purple and double-pointed needles size 7 US (4.5 mm). The eyes are in black plastic and I also used polyfil stuffing.

Esta semana o tema era apenas o Outono, e marca tambem a altura do concurso da estacao. Aqui nao ha nada que mais caracterize esta estacao que as cores que as folhas tomam antes de cair. Varios tons de amarelo, vermelho, laranja, carmim e castanho. Assim, decidi fazer pequenas almofadas em forma de folhas e nas cores outonais.
Como nao tenho qualquer talento para desenho, pedi ao meu marido para me fazer o contorno de dois tipos de folha, a partir dos quais fiz moldes de papel vegetal.

This week the them was simply Fall and we will also have our seasonal contest. Here nothing says Fall more than all the colors the leaves change into before they fall. So many shades of yellow, red, orange, dark pink and brown. So, I decided to make small leaf shaped pillows.
Since I have no talent to draw whatsoever I asked my husband to sketch the outlines for two kinds of leaves, and from those I made parchment paper molds.

Esta semana o tema proposto foi fazer ou modificar almofadas ou fronhas. Eu encontrei um tecido de flanela castanho com circulos de varias cores que adorei, e depois coordenei com uma tira de flanela laranja. Um projecto simples mas de que gostei bastante. Foi apenas coser as tiras de laranja nas extremidades do tecido castanho, e depois coser a toda a volta deixando uma pequena abertura. Enchi com uma mistura de espuma esfarelada e enchimento de nylon.

This week the theme was to make or modify pillows and pillowcases. I found some brown flannel fabric with multicolored circles I just loved and then decided to coordinate with a strip of orange flannel. A simple project that I really enjoyed. It was only sewing the orange strips at the end of each side and then sew all around leaving a small opening. I filled it with a mix of shredded foam and polyfil.

For this category it was necessary to make a project that would use two or more colors. Since I'm a big fan of the film "Howl's Moving Castle" I decided to make a hotpad depicting a flame inspired by "Calcifer", the fire demon that moves the "castle". The pattern "Inflammable Hotpad" is by Sharon Fuller. I used Patons Classic Wool in orange and the black yarn is either the same kind of wool or Lion Brand Vanna's Choice. Esta semana celebramos o nosso decimo aniversario de casamento. Aproveitamos para visitar mais um parque aqui perto e fazer uma boa caminhada. O tempo colaborou, apesar de nublado e um pouco frio nao choveu.
As arvores estao cobertas de amarelos, laranjas e castanhos. Eu adoro o Outono aqui.

This week we celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary. We visited another Metropark nearby and went on a nice hike. The weather helped and although cloudy and a bit cold it didn't rain.
The trees are covered in yellow, orange and brown. I love Fall here.

Esta semana foi proposto fazermos algo que nunca tinhamos experimentado antes, algo ate que ainda nao tinhamos tido a coragem de tentar. Eu sempre gostei muito de macrame, mas e coisa que sempre achei dificil de aprender. Assim, e varios videos do You Tube depois, experimentei fazer uma pequena peca decorativa que talvez adicione ao meu porta-chaves. Usei fio de canhamo e um guizo.

This week the theme was trying to make something using a craft technique we hadn't tried before. I've always liked macrame but it was something I always found difficult to learn. So, after several You Tube videos later, I tried to make a small decorative piece I might add to my key chain. I used hemp string and a jingle bell.

Comecou melhor do que acabou, mas pronto. :)

It started better than it ended, but oh well. :)

For this category it was necessary to include a Japanese style Haiku poem (with only 3 lines and a set number of syllables for each one, 5-7-5). I made a pair of oriental style slippers. The pattern "Japanese House Slippers" is by Therese Timpson. I used Jo Sharp 8 Ply DK Pure Wool yarn in black and white and needles size 5 US (3.75 mm).

Fiz estas luvas sem dedos para a personagem Mei do filme "My Neighbor Totoro". E o esquema "Oak Grove" de Alana Dakos de "Never Not Knitting". Usei novelos The Alpaca Yarn Co. Classic Alpaca na cor verde 1400 e agulhas de duas pontas tamanho 2.5 US (3.0 mm).

It's the first project I submitted to this tournament, in the category Team Spirit.
I made these fingerless gloves for the character Mei from the movie "My Neighbor Totoro". The pattern "Oak Grove" is by Alana Dakos from "Never Not Knitting". I used The Alpaca Yarn Co. Classic Alpaca yran in green 1400 and double-pointed needles size 2.5 US (3.0 mm).

Esta semana o tema e fazer um amigo para nos ou para quem quisermos. Assim que acabei de ler o que nos era proposto, ja sabia o que ia fazer! Encontrei, ha ja algum tempo na seccao de pechinchas de uma livraria, um livro chamado "Felties" de Nellie Pailloux e foi de la que escolhi dois bonecos miniatura. Usei rectangulos de feltro de varias cores, tesoura, cola, enchimento e fios de bordar.

This week the theme was to make a friend for us or someone else. As soon as I was done reading the challenge I knew right away what I wanted to make! A good while back I found, in the bargain section of a bookstore, a book called "Felties" by Nellie Pailloux and it was from there that I chose two miniature plushies to make. I used craft felt in several colors, scissors, glue, polyfill and embroidery floss.

Passadas algumas horas tinha um panda e um gato samurai. Um para cada um dos meus gaiatos.

Esta semana o tema e o dia das bruxas, o "Halloween". Eu decidi fazer uma garrafa de veneno. Usei uma garrafa de ceramica, um guardanapo de papel alusivo ao tema e cola de decoupage Mod Podge com lustro. Recortei a imagem central e apliquei na frente da garrafa.

This week's theme is Halloween. I decided to make a poison bottle. I used a ceramic bottle, a Halloween themed napkin and gloss Mod Podge glue. I cut around the central image and applied to the front of the bottle.

A seguir decorei o gargalo com uma corrente, rotulo de cartolina que recortei e uma lapide autocolante.

Next I decorated the neck of the bottle with a chain, card stock label I cut to size and a tombstone dimensional sticker.

Esta semana o tema foi criar algo usando um recipiente de vidro. Eu usei uma jarra redonda e baixa e uma mistura de pedras de vidro polido de varias cores. Foi um projecto muito simples que consistiu apenas em usar uma pistola de cola quente para aderir as pedras de vidro a jarra. Gosto do resultado. :)

This week the theme was to create something using a glass container. I used a short round vase and a mix of decorative glass pellets in different colors. It was a very simple project in which I just used a hot glue gun to stick the pellets to the vase. I really like the way it turned out. :)

Esta semana tinhamos que fazer uma qualquer versao de um saco. Algo que sirva para guardar ou transportar qualquer coisa. Eu ja ha tempo que queria arriscar e fazer um projecto de costura mais complicado; nao e que seja muito complicado em si, mas para mim e. As instrucoes que usei para o meu "Little Bag of Secrets" (pequeno saco de segredos) sao do blog Penelope Waits. Usei dois quadrados de tecido de algodao (cerca de 22 x 22 cm) em cores contrastantes e fita azul escuro. Fica um saquinho muito jeitoso para pequenos projectos de tricot.

This week we had to make something to hold something else. I had been wanting to try a more complicated sewing project for a while now; not that it's that complicated, but for me it was. The instructions I used for my "Little Bag of Secrets" are from the blog Penelope Waits. I used two fat quarters in contrasting colors and dark blue ribbon. It'll be a handy bag for little knitting projects.

P.S. - Sim, eu sei que devia de ter engomado o tecido primeiro, mas ja estava muito atrasada e saltei esse passo.

Framboesas de Outono

Esta tarde fomos colher framboesas e macas ao pomar Spicer Orchards. Gostamos sempre muito de ir. Aproveitamos e compramos tambem peras, cidra, donuts de cidra e pao. Havia tanta abundancia de framboesas que la quero voltar muito em breve. Nesta altura ha tambem sempre muitas aboboras, crisantemos e ameixas.

This afternoon we went apple and red raspberry picking at Spicer Orchards. We always love going. We also got pears, cider, cider donuts and bread. There was such an abundance of raspberries that I want to go back very soon. This time of year they also always have lots of pumpkins, mums and plums.

Esta semana tivemos como tema as cores preto e branco. Decidi-me por um pequeno porta-moedas, e um projecto passo-a-passo gratis que encontrei ha tempo no blog Annekata e do qual ja tinha feito um em tweed. Usei um tecido preto e branco para o exterior, tecido preto para o interior, um fecho prateado e linha preta.

This week the theme given were the colors black and white. I decided to make a coin purse, it's a free project with a great tutorial that I found at the Annekata blog, and from which I had made one before in tweed. I used black and white fabric for the outside, black fabric for the lining, a silver closure and black thread.

No Parque

Depois de irmos ver as alpacas, passamos pelo Kensington Park. Os miudos gostam sempre de ir ao parque infantil e damos sempre um pequeno passeio. Nao ficamos muito tempo, era ja fim de tarde e a temperatura ja nao e de verao por estas bandas.

After going to see the alpacas we stopped by Kensington Park. The kids always like to go to the playground and we always go for a little walk. We didn't stay very long, it was late in the afternoon and summer temperatures are no more around these parts.

Alpaca Expo Day

Ontem a tarde fomos ate ao Triple Diamonds Alpaca Ranch onde se realiza anualmente, desde 2009, o "Alpaca Expo Day". Vimos muitas alpacas, uma das crias tinha nascido ao meio-dia. Contrario as minhas expectativas, havia apenas um pequeno grupo de senhoras a fiar e tricotar, e apenas duas bancas a vender las. Uma delas tinha la de merinos com cores que eu adorei, a "Color Bug Yarns" de Ann Ryan. Ela tem tambem uma loja Etsy, aqui.

Yesterday afternoon we went to the Triple Diamonds Alpaca Ranch where they hold the annual (since 2009) Alpaca Day Expo. We saw many alpacas and a cria that had been born at noon. There were a lot less fiber arts than I expected, only a small group of ladies spinning and knitting and only two places selling yarn. One of the booths had merino wool in lovely colors, it was Ann Ryan's "Color Bug Yarns". She also has an Etsy store here.

This week the theme was to make a miniature version of something. I once again chose a knitting project and made key rings with mini purses. No passado mes de Junho, a minha cunhada mais nova pediu-me para lhe fazer um gorro. Ela e a mae escolheram o esquema e os novelos e acabei ontem a noite, mesmo a tempo de lhe enviar para os anos. O esquema "Water Lily Hat" e de Lijuan Jing e os novelos sao Jojoland Rhythm Superwash; agulhas tamanho 6 US (4.0 mm).

In June my youngest sister-in-law asked me to knit her a hat. She and her mom chose the pattern and the yarn and I finished last night, just in time for her birthday. The pattern is "Water Lily Hat" by Lijuan Jing, made with Jojoland Rhythm Superwash and needles size 6 US (4.0 mm).

E, para mim, acabei este aquece-pescocos circular. No meu grupo de tricot comecamos este mesmo projecto todas ao mesmo tempo. E um esquema gratis de Jen Geigley entitulado "GAP-tastic Cowl". O meu foi feito com novelos Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick na cor Cranberry, e agulhas tamanho 13 US (9.0 mm).

Esta semana o tema centra-se nos concursos de artes domesticas e nao so, que decorrem todos os anos nas feiras de cada estado.
Se eu fosse submeter algo, seria quase de certeza algo tricotado. Assim, decidi fazer estas luvas sem dedos que tinha na minha lista ha ja varios meses. O esquema "Miss Myrtle" e um original de Alexis Winslow que adquiri atraves do site Knit Picks. Usei um novelo Knit Picks Palette na cor Currant e agulhas de duas pontas tamanho 2 US (2.75 mm).

This week our theme centered on the home arts and other competitions annually held in state fairs.
If I was to submit something it would most likely be something knitted. So I decided to make a pair of fingerless gloves I've had in my queue for months. The pattern, "Miss Myrtle", is an original by Alexis Winslow that I purchased through Knit Picks. I used Knit Picks Palette yarn in Currant, and size 2 US (2.75 mm) double-pointed needles.

Assim que soube que a Katie Boyette estava a trabalhar no seu segundo livro "More Knitwits", fiz logo a minha encomenda no Amazon. Chegou finalmente na semana passada e adoro! Todos os esquemas sao optimos e muito engracados. Ha criaturas para todos os gostos e, assim como no primeiro livro, todas tem uma historia. O talento e o senso de humor desta brilhante autora sao uma combinacao perfeita. Recomendo entusiasticamente!

As soon as I heard Katie Boyette was working on her second book "More Knitwits" I rushed to Amazon to pre-order it. It finally arrived last week and I love it! All the patterns are great and fun. There are creatures for all tastes and, just like in the first book, they all have a story. This brilliant author's talent and sense of humor are a perfect combination. Highly recommended!

Romeo Peach Festival

Este fim de semana fomos, pela primeira vez ate a vila de Romeo onde, desde 1931, organizam todos os anos um festival de pessegos. Havia muita coisa feita com pessegos: tartes, bolo, sumo, compota, molho agridoce, marinada e sacos de pessegos frescos. Havia uma zona grande com entretenimento para miudos e graudos e, os nossos, passaram la varias horas. :)

Assistimos ainda a uma corrida de camas e a uma parada de carros antigos.

This weekend we went to the village of Romeo for the first time where they've had an annual peach festival since 1931. There was a lot of peaches and peach products like pie, cider, bread, preserves, salad dressing and marinade. There was a good size midway where our boys spent several hours. :)

We also watched bed races and a classic car parade.

Esta semana foi proposto fazer-se algo usando um livro. Eu pesquisei, decidi-me por uma mala feita a partir das capas rigidas de um livro, comprei os materiais e depois.... quando chegou a altura de destruir um livro... nao fui capaz. Gosto muito de livros, mesmo dos que nao gostei muito nem vou voltar a ler. Prefiro doa-los, havera sempre alguem que os va apreciar.
Assim, vou ficar a espera do proximo desafio.

This week we were supposed to make something using a book. I researched, decided on a handbag made from a book's hardcovers, bought the supplies I needed and then... when the time came to destroy the book... I couldn't do it. I love books, even the ones I didn't like much or won't read again. I prefer to donate them, someone out there will enjoy them.
So, I'll just wait for the next challenge.

Esta semana nao consegui terminar nenhum projecto. O avo do meu marido faleceu no Domingo passado e, como ele estava gravemente doente, temos dividido o nosso tempo entre o Michigan e o Indiana.
Honro, ao menos, o tema dos meios de transporte deixando aqui uma foto do meu maridao na sua Honda Shadow Spirit.

This week I was unable to finish any projects. My husband's grandfather passed away on Sunday and since he was gravely ill, we had been dividing our time between Michigan and Indiana.
I will at least honor the theme by posting a picture of my hubby and his Honda Shadow Spirit.

Esta semana teve um tema que e sempre muito util, acabar projectos pendentes (UFO = Unfinished Objects). Entre os muitos que tenho escolhi dois de tricot, um casaco de malha que fiz para o meu filho mais novo ao qual so faltava coser os bolsos e os botoes; e um par de meias que tinha comecado no ano passado.

This week's theme is always very useful, finishing any UFO. Among the many I have I chose two knitting ones, one is a cardigan I made for my youngest son that needed the pockets and buttons sewn on; and the other one is a pair of socks I started last year.

O casaco de malha foi um teste do esquema Beetle Cardigan de Justyna Lorkowska. Fiz com novelos Lion Brand Wool Ease e agulhas tamanhos 3 (3.25 mm) e 5 (3.75 mm) US.

The cardigan was a test knit for the Beetle Cardigan pattern by Justyna Lorkowska. I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Yarn and needles sizes 3 (3.25 mm) and 5 (3.75 mm) US.

Para as meias usei o esquema Continuous Rib Socks de Kath Glover. Usei um novelo Lang Yarns Jawoll Color Aktion e agulhas tamanho 1 1/2 (2.5 mm) US.

Iron Craft Challenge #32 - Summer

Esta semana o tema e apenas o Verao, e e tambem altura para mais um concurso. Eu, mais uma vez, levei que tempos para decidir o que fazer. Para mim, Verao e (ou costumava ser) praia e sol e foi esse tema que escolhi. Tenho tantas saudades do mar!
Comecei por pintar tres pequenas telas de tres cores diferentes: dourado, azul escuro e azul turquesa.

This week the theme is simply Summer and it's also time for another contest. Once again it took me forever to decide what to do. For me, Summer is (or used to be) the beach and sun and that's the theme I went with. I miss the ocean so much!
I started by painting three small canvases in three different colors: gold, dark blue and turquoise blue.

A seguir usei autocolantes dimensionais, conchas (recolhidas na Florida e em Portugal) e elementos em plastico para decorar; foram afixados com cola.

Next I used dimensional stickers, seashells (gathered in Florida and Portugal) and some plastic pieces as decoration; they were affixed using glue.

E ficaram assim depois da cola secar.

This is the result once the glue dried.

Iron Craft Challenge #31 - Sculptural

Esta semana o desafio centrou-se num material, plasticina e outras massas moldaveis semelhantes (como Fimo ou Sculpey).
Como nao tenho qualquer aptidao artistica para a escultura, levei quase a a semana toda a tentar decidir or que fazer. Depois de brincar um bocadinho com a massa, tentei fazer uma mistura interessante de cores com um aspecto marmorizado. Usei Sculpey em dois tons de rosa e um pouco de dourado. Fiz varias formas simples e depois converti as ovais em botoes e as outras duas em pendentes.

This week the challenge centered on a material, sculpture clay (like Fimo or Sculpey) or even play-doh.
Since I have no artistic talent at all for sculpting it took me most of the week to try and decide what to do. After playing with the materials a bit, I tried making an interesting mix of colors with a marbled look. I used Sculpey in two shades of pink and a bit of gold. I made several simple shapes and then converted some into buttons and the other two into pendants.

Next they baked in the oven according to package directions.

Nada de extraordinario, mas acho que ate nem ficaram muito mal para primeira tentativa.

Como vivemos na floresta ha sempre muita bicharada aqui a volta. Os insectos sao mais que muitos, e nao sao a minha parte preferida. Uma das excepcoes sao as libelinhas. Ha imensas, de todos os tamanhos e cores. Sao bonitas, amigaveis, acrobaticas, nao mordem e nao picam. As vezes ate voam a nossa volta e poisam na minha mao.

Since we live in the woods there are always many critters around. Insects are in huge amounts and not my favorite. One exception are the dragonflies.There are so many in a lot of different colors and sizes. They are so pretty, friendly, acrobatic and they don't bite or sting. Sometimes they even fly around us and land on my hand.

Na noite passada tivemos uma tempestade a seguir a outra com trovoadas, vento e chuva torrencial. Esta manha fomos encontrar uma arvore caida que fez estragos numa outra. Como estava a bloquear a estrada, um dos nossos vizinhos fez o favor de lhe cortar o topo, para poder sair.
Riscos de viver na floresta.

Last night we had one storm after another with thunder, wind and torrential rain. This morning we found a tree that had fallen and damaged another on the way down. Since it was blocking the road, one of our neighbors was very kind and cut the top off himself, so he could leave.
Living in the woods has its risks.

Iron Craft Challenge #30 - Hot, hot, hot!

O desafio desta semana vem a proposito desta onda de calor que parece ter invadido pelo menos metade deste pais. Depois de andar um pouco as voltas, a minha inspiracao foi o fogo. Escolhi tricotar o esquema "Campy And The Mallows" da brilhante Anna Hrachovec que tem um dos meus sites preferidos, Mochimochi Land.
Fiz com novelos Lion Brand Vanna's Choice e agulhas tamanho 7 US (4.5 mm). Como comecei um pouco tarde, nao tenho fotos dos varios passos do trabalho.

This week's challenge had to do with this heat wave that has taken over at least half the country. After taking a while thinking about what to do I drew inspiration from fire. I decided to knit the pattern "Campy And The Mallows" by the brilliant Anna Hrachovec from the awesome Mochimochi Land.
I used Lion Brand Vanna's Choice yarn and needles size 7 US (4.5 mm). I started my project late so I don't have any in progress photos.

O tema desta semana sao botoes. Eu adoro botoes! Acho que me ficou de quando a nossa avo materna, que era uma costureira eximia, nos deixava brincar com os muitos e variados botoes que tinha sempre aramazenados.
Aqui ha tempo tinha visto, em mais que um sitio na internet, botoes de madeira feitos a mao.Como se ha coisa que ha aqui em abundancia sao galhos e paus de varios tamanhos, decidi experimentar.
Primeiro escolhi alguns galhos do chao de grossuras diferentes e usei, pela primeira vez, uma serra electrica para os cortar as rodelas. Nao medi nada, foi tudo a olho.

This week's theme are buttons. I love buttons! I think I get that from when our maternal grandmother, who was an excellent seamstress, would let us play with the many and assorted buttons she always had stored.
A while back I had seen handmade wood buttons in a few different places online. If there is something we have plenty f around here is limbs and sticks of all sizes, so I decided to try it.
First I selected a few limbs from the ground of different thickness and used an electric saw for the first time to cut them into slices. I didn't measure, I just eyeballed it.

Then I used sandpaper to make them smoother.
Para fazer os furos utilizei um berbequim manual.
I made the holes using a hand drill.

Depois de limpar o po, apliquei uma camada de oleo para madeira. Que nao so faz sobressair a textura da madeira como tambem ajuda a conservar e selar.
After cleaning the dust I applied some wood oil. It brings out the texture in the wood and it helps seal it.

Ainda nao sei quando os vou utilizar, mas sou capaz de fazer mais de outros tamanhos.
I don't know what I'll use them on yet but I might make more in different sizes.

University of Michigan - Exhibit Museum of Natural History

Este sabado passamos o dia em Ann Arbor, uma cidade a cerca de vinte minutos a sul de Brighton. Primeiro visitamos o Museu de Historia Natural que pertence a Universidade do Michigan (as fotos sao todas deste museu). Quatro andares que abarcam paleontologia, geologia, fauna, flora, microbiologia e um pouco de antropologia e arqueologia. Alem das exposicoes, gostei muito do edificio em si.
Da parte da tarde voltamos ao Hands-On Museum, um museu com variadas actividades didacticas interactivas para criancas.

This saturday we spent the day in Ann Arbor, a city about twenty minutes to the south of Brighton. First we visited the Museum of Natural History that is part of the University of Michigan (all pictures are of this museum). Four floors that include paleontology, geology, fauna, flora, microbiology and a bit of anthropology and archaeology. I liked the exhibits and the building itself.
In the afternoon we went back to the Hands-On Museum that has several educational and fun activities for kids.

Iron Craft Challenge #28 - Reuse

Esta semana foi proposto que se utilizasse algo que normalmente se deita fora ou se manda para a reciclagem. Eu ja ha algum tempo que queria experimentar fazer uma lanterna com uma lata de cafe. Assim, encontrei uns padroes de pontos na inernet, recortei e colei a volta da lata e, usando um martelo e furador, fiz os furos necessarios. O problema que tive e que na zona dos furos a lata ficava um pouco amolgada. Na zona mais perto da abertura ainda consegui martelar pelo lado de dentro e ficou melhor, mas mais para o fundo foi mais dificil.

This week it was proposed to reuse something you would normally throw away or send to the recycling. I always wanted to try making a coffee can lantern. So I found some dotted patterns online, cut and taped it around the can and, using an awl and hammer, made the necessary holes. The problem I had was that there was a dent around each of the holes. The areas around the opening I was able to smooth out, but towards the bottom was harder. Next I spray painted with a copper tone. I also had some trouble taking a good picture, I think I needed a bigger candle given the size of the can but I didn't have one.

O esquema e de Emily Ivey e estou a usar novelos Bernat Softee Chunky em duas cores, tijolo e bege; agulhas tamanho 8 US (5.0 mm).
Ja sairam duas partes e aqui fica o que temos ate agora.

During the month of July, through the "Knitted Toys" group on Ravelry, I'm doing a mystery knit-along, a new part of the pattern is published every friday and by the end of the month we'll have a finished animal. The pattern is by Emily Ivey and I'm using Bernat Softee Chunky yarn in brick and light brown; needles size 8 US (5.0 mm).

Comecei e acabei de ler este livro este fim de semana. Um livro muito interessante sobre a vida de Mary Anning que descobriu muitos e importantes fosseis no Reino Unido que revolucionaram os conhecimentos cientificos do seculo XIX, numa altura em que as mulheres eram consideradas insignificantes, sem inteligencia e muito inferiores aos homens. Contou com a ajuda da sua amiga Elizabeth Philpot que se dedicou ao estudo de fosseis de peixes. Ambas tem a si dedicados museus na cidade de Lyme Regis onde viveram e fizeram as suas descobertas, e ambas fizeram inumeras contribuicoes para museus no Reino Unido e Franca.

I started and finished reading this book this weekend. A very interesting book about the life of Mary Anning who discovered many and important fossils in the United Kingdom that revolutionized the scientific knowledge of the 19th century, in a time when women were considered insignificant, not intelligent and very inferior to men. She had the help of her friend Elizabeth Philpot who dedicated her time to the study of fish fossils. Both have museums dedicated to them in Lyme Regis where they lived and made their discoveries, and they both made contributions to museums in the UK and France.

Acabei de ler este livro de Montserrat Rico Gongora, que me foi dado pelo meu pai. Uma historia muito interessante com base em estranhos e controversos factos veridicos, em que esteve envolvido o grande escritor Fernando Pessoa.

Achei por vezes um pouco verboso, o que tambem se pode ficar a dever a traducao, mas e um livro que recomendo e de que gostei muito. Obrigada Pai!

I have just finished reading this book ("Passengers of the Fog") by Montserrat Rico Gongora, which was given to me by my father. A very interesting story based on true and quite strange and controversial events that also involved the great writer Fernando Pessoa.

I thought it was wordy at times, maybe also due to the translation, but I really enjoyed and recommend it. Thanks Dad!

Iron Craft Challenge #27 - Stars And Stripes

O tema desta semana evoca as celebracoes do 4 de Julho, dia da independencia dos Estados Unidos.

Como nao costumamos decorar para a ocasiao, queria fazer algo de util. Vi algures na internet uma pagina para imprimir com um jogo do galo em estilo patriotico e achei uma optima ideia pois os meus filhotes adoram jogar. Usei uma placa quadrada de madeira fina, estrelas e quadrados tambem de madeira ja cortada, tintas acrilicas e selante em spray.

This week's theme is closely tied to the 4th of July celebrations. Since we don't usually decorate for this holiday I wanted to make something useful. Somewhere online I saw a printable page with a patriotic tic-tac-toe game and I loved the idea because my boys love playing. I used a plywood square board (12x12 inches) and also pre-cut stars and squares, acrylic paints and a spray sealant.

Pintei a base azul, as estrelas de branco e os quadrados as riscas vermelhas e brancas, com a ajuda de fita de pintor.

I painted the base blue, the stars white and the squares in red and white stripes with the help of masking tape.

Assim que a base secou, medi e marquei as linhas do jogo e apliquei fita de pintor para as delinear antes de pintar.

As soon as the base was dry, I measured and marked the game lines and taped before painting.

Depois de secas todas as pecas apliquei uma camada de selante em spray e deixei secar.

After all pieces were dry I sprayed on a coat of sealant and let dry.

Vi este esquema no site Knitpicks e adorei. Um projecto muito rapido e simples que fica uma fofura.
Usei novelos Lion Brand Vanna's Choice em branco, verde e azul; agulhas tamanho 7 US (4.5 mm). Os olhos sao de plastico e dos que tem um dispositivo de seguranca que os impede de serem removidos e engolidos por criancas, mas podem tambem ser bordados com fio preto, como o nariz e os bigodes. Escolhi fazer as orelhas de gato, mas o esquema tem instrucoes para fazer varias diferentes.
O blog Acornbud's Yarns tem uma serie de Pookies ao estilo Star Wars que sao o maximo!

I saw this patterns on the Knitpicks site and I loved it. A very easy and quick project that is just so cute.
I used Lion Brand Vanna's Choice yarn in white, green and blue; needles size 7 US (4.5 mm). I also used plastic safety eyes but they can be embroidered with black thread just like the nose and whiskers. I made kitty ears but the pattern has instructions for other kinds as well.

Iron Craft Challenge #26 - Camp Craft

Para esta semana o tema sao os trabalhos manuais que os miudos aqui fazem em sitios tipo ATL. Eu como nunca fui a nenhum aqui tive que fazer alguma pesquisa. Ha muita informacao e muitas instrucoes em variados sites e blogs, e acabei por decidir fazer um tear simples de cartao e cordel. Usei um cartao quadrado, medi e marquei intervalos de 1 cm, fiz cortes e passei por eles o cordel na vertical.
Depois usei novelos Lion Brand Wool Ease Chunky em verde, azul e tijolo para tecer as riscas. Cortei cada seccao de la ao acaso para ficar mais interessante, e usei uma agulha de las para facilitar o trabalho. Depois foi so cortar os fios de cordel no verso e atar um no duplo a cada dois fios para evitar que se desmanche.

For this week the theme are camp crafts. Since I've never been to a camp of any kind I had to do some research. I found lots of sites and blogs with information and instructions and I decided to make a simple cardboard and string loom. I used a square piece of cardboard, I measured and marked half an inch intervals, made cuts and then passed the string through vertically.
Then I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Chunky in green, blue and brick to weave stripes. I cut each length at random to make it more interesting, and I used a blunt needle to make the work easier. In the end I just cut the string in the back of the loom and tied a double knot for every two pieces of string to prevent it from unraveling.

Esta tarde fomos colher morangos e cerejas ao Spicer Orchards. Um pomar muito agradavel onde ja colhemos framboesas e macas no Outono passado. Esteve um dia quente e solarengo e os miudos gostam sempre muito de ir.

Amanha vou estar atarefada a fazer doces.

This afternoon we went to Spicer Orchards to pick strawberries and cherries. It's a really nice orchard where we picked raspberries and apples last Fall. It was a hot and sunny day and the kids always enjoy it.

Esta semana o tema sao os novos e muito populares codigos de barras quadrados (QR Codes), que podem ser lidos por aplicacoes para telefones. No site QR Stuff podem criar-se estes codigos gratis que podem conter enderecos electronicos, texto, imagens, sites, etc.
Primeiro pensei em fazer algo em costura, mas como tiramos um fim de semana grande para visitar familia, optei por algo mais simples e rapido. Os codigos sao perfeitos para ponto cruz e foi o que fiz. A minha ideia era entao coser o codigo numa das minhas bolsas de tricot ou numa mochila mas, infelizmente o leitor nao consegue ler o meu codigo depois de feito. Penso que sera muito pequeno e pouco claro, talvez. Mas aqui fica. Nao tenho tempo para fazer um maior a tempo, mas hei-de tentar outra vez. :)

This week the theme are the very popular QR Codes, que square codes that can be found on countless items these days and can be easily read by phone apps. On the QR Stuff site you can create free codes that point to text, pictures, sites, e-mail, etc.
At first I was leaning towards a sewing project, but since we took a long weekend to visit with family I had to opt for something a little quicker and easier. These codes are perfect for cross stitching and so that is what I did. My idea was then to sew it onto one of my knitting bags or a backpack but, unfortunately, my reader can't read the the stitched code. I'm thinking it's too small and therefore not clear enough maybe. But here it is, I don't have time to make a bigger one but I'll try again sometime. :)

Camisolinha Rendada

A nossa sobrinha nasceu no dia 14 ao fim da tarde. E mesmo a tempo acabei esta camisolinha; o esquema e de Jenny Watson incluido no livrete "Babe". Usei novelos Cascade Ultra Pima e agulhas tamnhos 3 US (3.25 mm) e 5 US (3.75 mm). Leva ainda tres botoes que escolhi para que fizessem contraste com o rosa vivo.

E um esquema pouco claro que nao recomendo a principiantes.

Our niece was born on the 14th at the end of the day. And just in time I finished this little lacy sweater; the pattern is by Jenny Watson included in the "Babe" booklet. I used Cascade Ultra Pima yarn and needles sizes 3 (3,25 mm) and 5 (3.75 mm) US. It also requires three buttons and I chose mine to be contrasting to the hot pink.

The pattern is not very clear and I do not recommend it for beginners.

Iron Craft Challenge #24 - Something For Him

Aqui nos EUA o Dia do Pai e a 19 de Junho, e foi este o tema desta semana. Decidi fazer algo para oferecer ao meu marido, a quem dar prendas e sempre um pouco complicado. Levei uns dias a pensar o que fazer ate que me decidi por decorar uma moldura com uma fotografia dos miudos. Usei uma moldura simples de madeira, resto de um tecido que ca tinha, cola Mod Podge Matte, letras de madeira, tintas Ceramcoat nas cores prateada e azul e cola Tacky Glue.
Comecei por cortar o tecido a medida, pincelei a moldura com cola e apliquei o tecido. A seguir apliquei duas camadas de cola por cima. Pintei as zonas expostas com tinta azul. Enquanto a cola e tinta secavam, pintei as letras de prateado. Usei cola Tacky Glue para aplicar as letras. Depois foi so imprimir uma foto dos miudos a medida e inserir na moldura. Como estava muito atrasada nem me lembrei de tirar fotos do meu progresso.

Here in the US Father's Day is on June 19th, and that is the theme for this week. I wanted to make something for my husband to whom is always difficult finding a gift for. It took me a few days but I finally decided on decorating a frame with a picture of the kids. I used a simple wood frame, leftover fabric, Mod Podge Matte glue, wood letters, Ceramcoat paints in silver and blue and Tacky Glue.
I started by cutting the fabric to size, putting a layer of Mod Podge on the frame and then applying the fabric. Next I brushed on another two coats of glue. The remaining exposed areas were painted blue. While the frame was drying I painted the letters silver. I glued them on using Tacky Glue. Then it was just printing a picture of the kids to size and inserting it into the frame. I was running very late this week and forgot to take any in-progress shots.

Mais um presente para a nossa sobrinha que nasce para muito breve. A minha cunhada gosta muito de elefantes e assim fiz este. O esquema "Elephant and Ladybug" e de Ala Ela e pode ser encontrado aqui. Fiz com novelos Cascade 220 Wool num tom cinzento claro mesclado e agulhas tamanho 7 US (4.5 mm). Decidi nao incluir a joaninha que faz parte do esquema original.

Another present for our niece due to be born any time now. My sister-in-law likes elephants e so I decided to make this one. The pattern "Elephant and Ladybug" is by Ala Ela and can be found here. I used Cascade 220 Wool yarn in a light heather gray and needles size 7 US (4.5 mm). I decided not to add the ladybug as stated in the original pattern.

Esta semana foi proposto fazer-se algo com um mapa ou inspirado por um mapa. Nao foi coisa que me suscitasse grande inspiracao, mas depois de encontrar um tecido com mapas medievais tentei encontrar um projecto de costura. Enquanto procurava, encontrei instrucoes para fazer um painel de mensagens aqui no site Sew, Mama, Sew! . Segui fielmente as instrucoes porque nunca tinha feito nada semelhante. Usei uma tela de pintura, tecido, enchimento fino sintetico, fita e uma pistola de agrafes.

This week it was proposed to make something using a map or map inspired. It wasn't something that I was very inspired by, but after finding some fabric with old maps I started looking for a sewing project. While looking I found this tutorial for a fabric bulletin board at the Sew, Mama, Sew! website. I followed the instruction closely because it was the first time I tried making anything like it. I used a stretched canvas, fabric, light batting, ribbon and a staple gun.

Usei restos de um novelo Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino e agulhas tamanho 1.5 US (2.5 mm). Um projecto muito rapido e gostei modo do modo inovador de como se montam.

I made these booties for our niece that is due to be born any day now. The pattern No Button Baby Booties" is by Mixtape Memories from Mandy Ferrel Designs. I used some leftover Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino and needles size 1.5" US (2.5 mm). It's a very quick project and I really like the innovative construction.

Iron Craft Challenge #22 - Al Fresco

Agora que as temperaturas ja convidam, esta semana o tema proposto foi fazer algo relacionado com refeicoes ao ar livre. Uma das coisas que eu andava a precisar era de um tabuleiro de bom tamanho; cada vez que comemos na mesa la fora eu passo a vida de tras para diante ate trazer tudo o que e necessario. Assim, comprei um tabuleiro simples branco e decorei com um tecido alegre e veranejo e cola de decoupage Mod Podge Gloss.
Decidi tambem fazer quatro bases para copos com algumas amostras de azulejos beges que tinha ha ja imenso tempo. Cortei feltro laranja a medida que colei no verso de cada azulejo para nao riscar e, a seguir, cortei quadrados do papel que apliquei com a mesma cola.

Now that temperatures are more inviting, this week's theme was to make something related to meals eaten outside. One thing I had been needing was a decent sized tray; every time we eat outside I spend my life going back and forth until I get everything we need. So, I got a simple white melamine tray and then decorated it with a happy and summery fabric and Mod Podge Gloss glue.
I also had time to make four coasters using a few beige tile samples we've had for years. I cut orange felt to size and then glued on the underside of each tile to prevent scratching, then I cut squares out of scrapbooking decorated paper and applied using Mod Podge as well.

Para esta semana o tema e a nossa heranca cultural. O projecto que escolhi foi-me sugerido pela minha irma mais nova, Sofia. Tipicos da regiao do Minho em Portugal (a familia do nosso avo materno era de la), os Lencos dos Namorados eram feitos pelas raparigas e depois eram feito chegar a posse do seu amado. Se ele o usasse em publico entao o amor era correspondido. Como e tradicional, usei pano de algodao e linhas de bordar a dois fios (Anchor e DMC) em cores varias. O desenho gratis obtive no site Enleio de Cores, dedicado ao tema que tambem aceita encomendas. Os lencos teriam, normalmente, um rebordo decorativo que eu nao fiz porque estou a pensar emoldurar.

For this week the theme is our cultural heritage. The project I chose was suggested by my youngest sister Sofia. From the Minho region in Portugal (our maternal grandfather's family was from there), the Lencos dos Namorados - Sweetheart Handkerchiefs, were made by girls who would then find a way to get them to the boy they loved. If the boys wore them in public then they knew they would accept being their boyfriend. As is traditional I used cotton fabric and 2 threads of embroidery floss in several colors (Anchor and DMC). The free pattern came from Enleio de Cores, a site dedicated to this theme and where you can place an order for one. The handkerchiefs would normally have a decorative border that I didn't do because I'm thinking of framing it.
It reads: "Go happy handkerchief flying on the wings of a nightingale go see the loveliest face that covers the sun."
In Portuguese it rhymes. :)

A Boina da Catarina

Para a minha sobrinha fiz esta boina. E em tricot com flores em crochet. O esquema gratis e de Pamela W. Allen do blog Tangled e foi feito com novelos Rowan RYC Cotton Luxury DK; agulhas tamanho 4 US (3.5 mm). Para o centro das flores, cosi tres missangas branco perola em cada uma.

Iron Craft Challenge#20 - To a Tee

Esta semana foi proposto decorar ou alterar uma t-shirt. Eu ja algum tempo que queria experimentar as folhas tipo de decalque que se aplicam em tecido com o ferro de engomar, assim aproveitei a oportunidade. Usei da marca Wilton que tem tambem um site gratuito onde se podem criar imagens a esolha..
Encontrei varias imagens que adorei no loja DigitalDoDads no Etsy, e escolhi uma de um pavao. De seguida imprimi a imagem, coloquei na t-shirt e engomei de acordo com as instrucoes da embalagem. E um processo bastante facil e rapido.

This week the proposed theme was to alter or decorate a t-shirt. I had been wanting to try iron-on transfer sheets for a while now and this was a great opportunity. I used Wilton brand, which also has a free site where you can go and create your own images.
I found many great images at the Etsy store DigitalDoDads and I chose one with a peacock. Then I printed, placed on the shirt and ironed according to the package directions. It was an easy and fast process.

Na nossa ultima visita a Portugal, comprei finalmente varias meadas de la Beiroa exclusiva da Retrosaria da Rosa Pomar, que tem tambem um blog fascinante - A Ervilha Cor De Rosa. Um tesouro de historia e tradicoes Portuguesas de costura, tricot, crochet e muito mais.
Comprei tambem varios alfinetes de tricot, que aqui sao carissimos.
A la Beiroa e exclusivamente de origem Portuguesa, na sua maior parte da raca Bordaleira da Serra da Estrela. As cores sao naturais sem tintura.
Estou ansiosa por fazer luvas e gorros quentinhos para o nosso Inverno longo e rigoroso!
