Iron Craft Challenge #13 - Best In Show

Os animais foram o tema para esta semana. Eu adoro tricotar criaturas em geral e, do livro Knitwit de Katie Boyette, escolhi esta lagosta. Quis fazer algo de diferente. Usei um novelo Cascade 220 e agulhas tamanho 5 US (3.75 mm). E um esquema trabalhoso mas nao muito complicado.

Animals were this week's theme. I love knitting critters in general so, from the book Knitwit by Katie Boyette, I chose this lobster. I wanted to make something different. I used Cascade 220 yand and needles size 5 US (3.75 mm). It's a labor intensive pattern but not too complicated.

Iron Craft Challenge #12 - Wanna Get Lucky?

O tema para esta semana e a sorte. Tive alguma dificuldade em escolher o que fazer. Nao tenho quase nenhumas supersticoes nem uso amuletos. A primeira coisa que me veio a ideia foram gatos pretos porque, apesar de haver muita gente que os considera um simbolo de azar, para mim sao o contrario. Eu adoro gatos, pretos e de todas as outras cores! :)
A parte mais dificil foi aplicar a minha escolha, mas la me decidi por pintar um vaso de barro. Usei tintas acrilicas Ceramcoat nas cores branco, verde folha, preto, tangerina, amarelo e azul lagoa. A imagem do gato e clipart gratis retirado da internet e, depois de seca a parte pintada de branco e verde, passei-o para o vaso a lapis tres vezes. Contornei e depois pintei cada gato com a tinta preta. Por fim, pintei algumas flores a volta do topo e tambem o prato, em preto e branco.
De modo a proteger a tinta da humidade, ainda vou aplicar varias camadas de selante em spray (Krylon) por dentro e por fora.

The theme for this week is lucky. I had some trouble deciding what to make. I don't have hardly any superstitions and don't use good luck charms. The first thing that popped into my head were black cats because although many people consider them a sign of bad luck, for me they are the opposite. I love cats, black and all other colors! :)
The hardest part was what to apply my choice to, but I finally decided on painting a terracotta pot. I used water-based Ceramcoat acrylic paints in white, leaf green, black, tangerine, bright yellow and laguna blue. The cat image is free clipart found online and, after the white and green painted areas were dry, I used a pencil to outline it onto the pot three times. I filled in each cat shape with black paint. To finish I painted a few flowers around the top and I also painted the saucer in black and white.
In order to protect the paint from humidity, I will apply several coats of clear Krylon inside and out.

Iron Craft Challenge #11 - Easy Bein' Green

Verde. A cor verde foi o tema desta semana, alusivo a Primavera e ao St. Patrick's Day. Desta vez tive imensas ideias mas acabei por decidir tricotar vegetais verdes: ervilhas e um pepino. Os esquemas sao do livro "Amigurumi Knits" da fantastica Hansi Singh. Usei novelos Stitch Nation by Debbie Stoller Full o' Sheep nas cores Thyme e Meadow; o verde mais escuro e um novelo Everyday Soft Worsted Deborah Norville Collection. E agulhas de duas pontas tamanho 7 US (4.5 mm).

Green. The color green was this week's theme, for St. Patrick's Day and Spring. I had many ideas this time and finally decided to go with knitted green vegetables: peas and a cucumber. The patterns are from the book "Amigurumi Knits" by the amazing Hansi Singh. The yarn is Stitch Nation by Debbie Stoller Full o' Sheep, colors Thyme and Meadow; the darker green yarn is Everyday Soft Worsted Deborah Norville Collection. And double-pointed needles size 7 US (4.5 mm).

Iron Craft Challenge # 10 - FAT Tuesday In The QUARTER

Esta semana foi proposto nao um tema mas um material - um fat quarter de tecido, que e um rectangulo com cerca de 56 cm por 46 cm. A sugestao esta ligada ao Carnaval (Fat Tuesday) e ao local onde e mais celebrado aqui, o French Quarter na cidade de New Orleans.
A costura nao e um dos meus pontos fortes mas, por isso mesmo, decidi fazer varios pequenos projectos para aproveitar ao maximo a quantidade de tecido disponivel e tentar aprender mais algumas tecnicas. Depois de alguma pesquisa na internet, encontrei este site com instrucoes bastante claras para fazer uma bolsinha, fiz duas (e ficaram um bocadinho tortas), e este com um alfineteiro que adorei. Sendo pouco experiente, cumpri as instrucoes a risca com ambos. E fiz ainda um marcador de livros rectangular que adornei com uma pequena tranca de fio dourado e dois pendentes em forma de folha. Tem dentro dois rectangulos de cartao para lhe dar mais estabilidade.

This week we had not a theme but a material to work with - a fat quarter, which is a one-fourth yard cut of fabric that measures about 18" x 22". The suggestion links Fat Tuesday with the French Quarter in New Orleans.
Sewing is not one of my strongest skills, but for that reason I decided to make several little projects to make the most use of the material available and try to learn a few more techniques. After some online research I found this site with very clear instructions on how to make a pouch, I made two (that didn't turn out very straight), and this one with a tutorial on how to make a pincushion I really liked (even using felt for the bottom I didn't go over the dimensions). Being inexperienced I followed the instructions to the letter on both. I also made a rectangular bookmark decorated with a small gold thread braid and two leaf shapped charms. Inside there are two cardboard rectangles to give it more stability. (somehow this a different font than above and I can't seem to change to be the same......)

Nao Ha Maneira....

Do Inverno comecar a abrandar. Na semana passada ate parecia que a Primavera ja dava um arzinho da sua graca, mas depois voltamos a isto. E ha a possibilidade de mais para a semana que vem. A imagem (a foto foi tirada pelo meu marido) fala por si.

Do livro "Knitwit" de Katie Boyette, que ja aqui recomendei ha pouco tempo atras, fiz este ninja para o meu filho mais novo. O mais velho tambem quer um mas em vermelho. :)
Fiz com novelos Cascade 220 em preto e agulhas de duas pontas tamanho 7 US (4.5 mm).
Um esquema simples e pouco trabalhoso. Os detalhes da cara, olhos, faixa e estrela foram feitos em feltro, segundo moldes do proprio esquema, e cosidos depois do ninja pronto. O enchimento e polyfil.

Iron Craft Challenge #9... and the Oscar goes to...

Esta semana teve como tema o cinema, alusivo a entrega dos Oscars no Domingo passado. O desafio proposto foi escolher um filme que nos inspire e faze algo que o represente. Eu gosto de muitos filmes, mas nao ha nada como os filmes do Studio Ghibli, em especial os do realizador Hayao Miyazaki. Escolhi o personagem Totoro do filme "My Neighbor Totoro".
Decorei uma caixa antiga de cedro. Fiz o totoro em cartolina de varias cores, colei recortes diversos pre-comprados alusivos a natureza e apliquei varias camadas de cola de decoupage (Mod Podge). Por fim, deliniei com fita verde, dourada e cor de vinho.

Being the week of the 83rd Oscars Ceremony, this week's theme was the movies. We were to pick a movie for inspiration and make somehing that reflects it. There are many movies I really like, but there is nothing like the ones from Studio Ghibli especially the ones by director Hayo Miyazaki. I picked the Totoro character from " My Neighbor Totoro".

I decorated an old cedar box. The totoro is made of card stock in different colors, I glued pre-made nature cutouts throughout and then applied several coats of decoupage glue (Mod Podge). To finish I outlined with green, gold and maroon ribbons.

Iron Craft Challenge #8 - Hometown

Esta semana foi bastante atribulada e quase nao tive tempo para dedicar ao desafio proposto: a cidade de onde somos. Eu nasci em Lisboa e ha tanta coisa que a simboliza que tive dificuldade em decidir. Para ajudar, torci um pe, o meu filho mais novo esteve muito incomodado, e em casa, com uma bronquite e o Inverno voltou em forca com vinte centimetros de neve. Entre ontem e hoje la consegui terminar o meu projecto, nao ficou bem como eu esperava.
E uma imagem retirada de uma foto de uma calcada em Lisboa, que representa o barco e os dois corvos que fazem parte da lenda de S. Vicente, e que faz parte tambem do brasao da cidade. Passei o desenho para um saco de pano e depois cosi missangas a fazer o contorno; em preto para o barco e corvos e tons azul, verde e branco para a agua.

This week was quite eventful and I barely had time to tackle this week's challenge: our hometown. I was born in Lisbon, Portugal and there are so many symbols associated with it I had a tough time picking one. On top of that I twisted an ankle, my youngest was very bothered and home with bronchitis and Winter came back with a vengeance and ten inches of snow. Between last night and today I managed to finish my project, it didn't turn out exactly as I expected.
It's an image from a picture of a sidewalk in Lisbon, ornate designs made with limestone blocks are very typical in Portugal. It represents a boat and the two crows in the legend of St. Vincent, and they are also a part of the city's coat of arms. I passed the design onto the cloth tote and then sewn beads for the outline; black for the boat and crows and shades of blue, green and white for the water.

Depois de nevar a tarde toda de ontem e parte da noite, temos cerca de 20 a 25 cm de neve no chao.

Iron Craft Challenge #7 - Midas Touch

O toque do rei Midas foi o tema a desenvolver - ouro. Uma das sugestoes apresentadas foi usar folha de ouro e, sendo material e tecnica que nunca tinha experimentado, foi o que utilizei no meu projecto. E um material que nao e facil de manusear nem de aplicar. O processo em si e simples e utilizei um kit que ja traz todos os elementos necessarios. Pode aplicar-se primeiro uma camada de tinta vermelha que faz sobressair o tom dourado, a seguir pincela-se com cola especifica liquida e deixa-se secar por cerca de 30 a 60 minutos. A camada de cola deixa de estar molhada mas mantem-se peganhenta por 24 horas. Pode entao aplicar-se a folha dourada com a ajuda de um pincel ou pequena escova, ate estar do nosso agrado. Para manter a cor e evitar que comece a pelar, aplica-se seguidamente um liquido selante. Para finalizar, ha quem aplique mais uma camada desta vez um produto para dar um ar mais antigo.

Depois de considerar muitas hipoteses, fui ate a uma loja de artigos em segunda mao e encontrei uma garrafa de ceramica de sake por apenas 99 centimos. Decorei a base com uma fila de autocolantes metalicos. Nao apliquei a camada de tinta vermelha, pincelei a cola na superficie restante da garrafa. Apliquei a folha de ouro em seccoes ate estar coberta, tentando cobrir variadas pequenas falhas. Apliquei depois o selante e, por fim, decorei com um medalhao que esta pendurado por fio dourado.

The Midas touch was the theme to develop - gold. One of the suggestions was to use gold leaf and since it was a material and technique I had never tried before, that is what I used for my project. I found it to be difficult to handle and to apply. The process itself is simple and I used a kit that contained all the necessary elements. First you can apply a layer of red paint that will help the gold tones stand out, next you apply the adhesive and let it dry for about 30 to 60 minutes. This layer will stay tacky for up to 24 hours. Then you can apply the gold leaf to your liking with the help of a brush. To help maintain color and avoid peeling a layer of sealant in applied next. To finish, you can still apply a layer of antiquing liquid.

After pondering many possibilities, I headed to the local Salvation Army store. I found a ceramic sake bottle for only 99 cents. I decorated the base with a row of teal metallic stickers. I did not use the red paint and applied adhesive to the remaining area of the bottle. Then I applied the gold leaf in sections until the bottle was covered, trying to cover all the little flaws and seam lines. Next I applied a layer of sealant and, to finish, I hanged a decorative medallion using gold thread.

Gato de Neve

As temperaturas la fora hoje estao acima de 0! Ja nao me lembro da ultima vez que a maxima esteve positiva. :)
Apesar de estarem so 4 graus centigrados, depois de estarem -20 ate parece verao! Fui la fora brincar um bocadinho e, em vez do tradicional boneco de neve, fiz esta cabeca de gato muito descontraido. :)
