Iron Craft Challenge #13 - Eye Of The Needle

O tema desta vez centrou-se à volta de agulhas, de qualquer tipo: de coser, de bordar, de tricôt, de crochet, etc.
Eu andava à procura de algo para bordar quando re-encontrei um kit de feltro para fazer maracadores de livros. Já tinha feito dois e restava o último. E assim decidi que seria perfeito para o nosso tema. O marcador é cosido à mão com alguns pequenos motivos bordados.

The theme this time was centered around needles, of any kind: sewing, knitting, crochet, etc.
I was looking for something to embroider when I came across a kit to make felt bookmarks. I had already made two and there was the last one. So I decided it would be perfect for our challenge. The bookmark is all hand sewn with a few small embroidered accents.

Iron Craft Challenge #12 - Picnics

Piqueniques. Uma tao amada tradicao do tempo mais ameno, do Verao e das ferias! Quando fazemos piqueniques levamos sempre algo doce e, muitas vezes, faco estas bolachas que sao as nossas favoritas. Uma delicia, feitas com manteiga de amendoim, aveia e pepitas de chocolate. A receita, "Nutty For Oats", e do livro "King Arthur Flour Whole Grain Baking".

Picnics. Such a beloved warm weather, summer and vacation tradition! When we go on picnics we always take along something sweet, and it's often these cookies which are our favorite. Delicious, made with peanut butter, oats and chocolate chips. The recipe "Nutty For Oats" is from the book "King Arthut Flour Whole Grain Baking".

Iron Craft Challenge #11 - Rainy Days

Dias de chuva. A mim, o que me fazem lembrar sao as imensas ervas daninhas que aparecem por todo o lado depois das chuvas da primavera. Assim, decidi tricotar um par delas que se sao parecidas com dentes-de-leao, uma amarela e uma branca. O esquema gratis "Weeeds" e de Anna Hrachovec; usei restos de novelos de la e acrilico, nas cores amarelo, branco e verde, e agulhas tamanho 5 US (3.75 mm).

Rainy Days. What they remind me of is the multitude of weeds that show up everywhere after Spring rains. So I decided to knit a pair of weeds which look like dandelions, one yellow and one white. The free pattern "Weeeds" is by Anna Hrachovec; I used leftover wool and acrylic yarn in yellow, white and green, and needles size 5 US (3.75 mm).

Iron Craft Challenge #10 - Home Is Where The Heart Is

Eu tinha uma lata alta de cafe vazia guardada ha semanas, a espera que fosse convertida em algo util. E assim, aproveitei o tema (fazer algo para a casa ou em forma de casa) para a decorar.
Utilizei feltro em duas cores, tesoura, cola, tinta preta e pinceis. Depois de cortar o feltro a medida, colei a volta da lata. A seguir pintei a tampa de preto e deixei tudo secar.

I had been saving a tall empty coffee can for weeks, waiting to be converted into something useful. And so, inspired by our theme (make something for the home or shaped like a house) I decorated it.
I used felt in two colors, scissors, glue, black ink and paintbrushes.
After cutting the felt to fit I glued it onto the can. Next I painted the lid black and let everything dry.

Vai ser usada para guardar restos de novelos e outros materiais.

I'll use it to save leftover bits of yarn and other materials.

Iron Craft Challenge #9 - I've Got a Notion...

Desta vez, o tema foram materiais de costura sem ser tecido (fitas, botoes, fechos, molas, etc.). Eu fiz um gancho decorado com botoes em forma de bolinhos. Utilizei um gancho de metal base, feltro, botoes, cola, linha e agulha.

This time the theme was sewing notions. I made a barrette decorated with cupcake shaped buttons. I used a metal base, felt, buttons, glue, needle and thread.

Depois de cortar o feltro a medida da base, cosi-lhe os botoes. A seguir foi so colar o feltro a base. Muito simples. :)

After cutting the felt to fit the base, I sewn on the buttons. Then I just glued the felt onto the base. Very simple. :)

Iron Craft Challenge #8 - Playtime

Brincar foi o tema proposto. Fazer algo que seja um brinquedo, feito com brinquedos ou inspirado por um.
Eu gosto muito de fazer brinquedos e decidi fazer fruta em feltro. As instrucoes, para metade de uma pera e metade de uma maca, vieram do livro "Big Little Felt Universe" de Jeanette Lim.
Utilizei feltro em varias cores, papel vegetal, linha de varias cores, agulha, cartolina e enchimento de polyester.

Playtime was the challenge. Make something that is a toy, made with toys or inspired by a toy. I really enjoy making toys and I decided to make some felt fruit. The instructions for half a pear and half an apple came from the book "Big Little Felt Universe" by Jeanette Lim.
I used felt in several colors, parchment paper, several colors of thread, a needle, cardstock and polyester stuffing.

Iron Craft Challenge #7 - Ethnic Crafting

Desta vez o tema foi fazer algo inspirado por um pais, e uma cultura, diferente da nossa. Tivemos tambem um anfitriao convidado, o Dr. Russ que tem o blog NY Star Cards.
Eu escolhi a arte de origami do Japao, e fiz tres dobragens tradicionais: a garca, o capacete de samurai e um lirio. Segui as instrucoes do livro "The Simple Art of Japanese Paper Crafts" de Mari Ono, e usei papel proprio para origami.

This time we had to make something inspired by a country and culture different from our own. We also had a guest host, Dr. Russ from NY Star Cards.
I chose the art of origami from Japan and made three traditional folds: the crane, the samurai helmet and the lily. I followed the instructions from the book "The Simple Art of Japanese Paper Crafts" by Mari Ono, and I used origami paper.

Tesouros ~ Treasures

Nestes ultimos dias, estivemos em Kokomo, Indiana de visita a familia. Numa visita a uma loja de artigos em segunda mao, encontrei uma travessa branca com tres compartimentos de que gostei muito. Era uma pechincha por apenas 2 dolares. Quando a virei para ver a sua origem ali estava, "Made in Portugal". Pronto, estava feito. Veio comigo. :)

In these past few days we were in Kokomo, Indiana visiting family. In a trip to a flea market store I found a white tray with dividers that I really liked, and it was a bargain for just $2. When I turned it to see where it was made there it was "Made In Portugal". And that was it. It had to come with me. :)

No dia que voltamos, tinha na caixa de correio um envelope enviado pelo meu pai. E, la dentro, vinha este tesouro: o livro "Malhas Portuguesas - Historia e pratica do tricot em Portugal, com 20 modelos de inspiracao tradicional" da Rosa Pomar! Ja o estive a folhear e ja o comecei a ler, estou a adorar! Estou convencida que a maior parte das pessoas que se interessam pelo tema, nao fazem ideia da historia e das muitas tradicoes e tecnicas que o livro nos da a conhecer. As fotografias e imagens sao bastante claras e de facil compreensao. Estou feliz por ter aqui a minha copia, uma tao importante obra que vai, sem duvida alguma, ajudar a divulgar e preservar esta parte do nosso patrimonio e cultura.

The day we got back home there was an envelope sent by my father in our mailbox. And inside was this treasure: the book "Malhas Portuguesas" by Rosa Pomar! A book about the history and practice of knitting in Portugal that includes 20 patterns inspired by traditional techniques and designs. I have looked through it and I have started reading it and I love it! I am certain that most people that have an interest in knitting have no knowledge of the history and many techniques the book brings to light. The pictures and images are quite clear and easy to understand. I am happy to have my copy near me, a so very important work, that I have no doubt will help make known and preserve this part of our heritage and culture.

Iron Craft Challenge #6 - Peep, Peep, Peep

Aqui temos, mais uma vez, o tema dos Peeps (marshmallows cobertos de acucar de varias cores, que se vendem aqui por altura da Pascoa). Eu decidi fazer bolachas que se assemelham aos Peeps coelhos, mas tambem os ha em forma de pintos.
A receita "Sugar Cookie Cutouts" veio do livro "Cookies" de Martha Stewart.

Here it is again, the Peeps challenge. I decided to make cookies that look just like rabbit Peeps. The recipe for "Sugar Cookie Cutouts" is from the book "Cookies" by Martha Stewart.

Depois de arrefecerem, "pintei" cada bolacha com uma cobertura liquida de acucar em po e agua e coloquei-as num pratinho coberto com acucar em rosa choque, com a cobertura para baixo, ate estarem cobertas.

After the cookies were cooled, I painted each one with a liquid icing made of confectioner's sugar and water then put them down onto a plate with pink sugar, icing side down, until they were covered.

(Ah, e fiz cenouras tambem.)

(Oh, and I made carrots too.)

Depois e so deixar secar.

Then I just let them set.

Iron Craft Challenge #5 - Green or "Green"

Desta vez os nossos projectos tinham que ser em verde, ou "verde" em termos ecologicos de reciclagem. Eu como tenho a articulacao do polegar da mao direita a doer, precisava de fazer algo que nao fosse muito complicado. Como ja vi varias vezes fotografias de t-shirts transformadas em sacos, foi isso mesmo que decidi experimentar.

This time our projects had to green in color or"green" in terms of recycling materials. Since I'm nursing a very sore right thumb joint, I needed to make something that wasn't very labor intensive. Many times I've seen pictures of t-shirts getting turned into bags so I decided to try it.

Usei uma t-shirt de manga comprida, que o meu filho mais novo danificou pouco depois de a usar pela primeira vez. Tinha um rasgao na bainha e um pequeno buraco na frente.

I used a long sleeve t-shirt that my youngest son damaged not long after wearing it for the first time. It had a tear at the hem and a small hole in the front.

Comecei por cortar as mangas e gola a volta das costuras. Depois cosi a maquina a abertura na base. A seguir dobrei ao meio, no sentido do comprimento, a parte que eram os ombros e dei uns pontos para que as alcas nao fossem tao largas. Por fim, cosi um botao decorativo de modo a encobrir o pequeno buraco existente.

I started by cutting off the sleeves and ribbed neck opening around the seams. Then I machine sewed the bottom opening. Next I folded the parts that used to be the shoulders in half lengthwise and added a few stitches so that the handles would be a little narrower. To finish I added a decorative button to hide the little hole.
